Healthy skin has always made it's way onto the most coveted list but it's now more attainable than ever ! In order to have that glowing complexion and blemish free skin, you are going to have to commit to a skin care routine. Lucky for you, we've compiled the 8 best tips you can implement today that will see your skin thrive! But remember, unless you make these a habit, you're not likely to see results. Consistency is key!
The Golden Rule: Always remove your make-up!
Now, when we say always, we mean always, remove your make-up before going to sleep (yes, even if you're drunk at 2am!) The skin needs to breathe overnight and makeup prevents that, as leaving it on overnight clogs the pores which may cause blemishes and blackheads. The Société Pure Everyday Cleanser has to be one of our favourite ways to end the day. It is gentle, yet powerful at removing impurities, dirt and oil and it leaves your skin feeling smooth and fresh!
You really are what you eat.
The food you consume has one of the most powerful long term effects on your skin. Have a diet filled with processed food, alcohol and sugar and you're on the express train to wrinkle town! These factors encourage the degradation of collagen and elastin in your skin, leaving you behind with dry, sunken and aged skin. In addition to that, the inflammation that sugar causes in the body can aggravate conditions like acne and rosacea. Instead, choose food that is rich in antioxidants, Vitamin's A and C and Omega-3's. Bulk out your days with blueberries, mango and kiwi and whip up a salad with wild rice, pumpkin, spinach, sprouts, nuts, seeds and salmon and you have a nutritional powerhouse that will leave your skin glowing!
Sun Care and SPF
You would think that this is common knowledge, yet so many people still disregard the need for SPF. Believe us when we say it one of the most powerful ways to fight early signs of ageing! And yes, it can prevent you from looking like a leather boot. Don't skip the sunscreen just because you're not going out to sun bathe. Sun damage can occur even when it is overcast and cold outside. Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and make sure the label reads ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘non-acnegenic’ so that the product does not tend to block pores. Our go to sunscreen is Aspect Hydra-Shield SPF 15, it doubles as a lightweight super-hydrating moisturiser which is packed with potent skin protecting antioxidants, skin hydrators and nourishing botanical oils.
Own a plant
Not one that you may have heard of before but it's probably the easiest thing you can implement right away! As part of the photosynthetic and respiratory processes, plants release moisture vapour, which increases humidity of the air around them. This is highly beneficial for your skin as it decreases it's chances of drying out. In addition to this, plants purify the air around us, decreasing the pollutants that congest and irritate the skin, and it's all as easy as watering a plant once a week!
H2O to the rescue
You can swim in moisturiser if you like, but unless you're hydrated from within, your skin will simply soak it up and go back to its depleted state. If you don't believe us, do the water test! Take a before photo, then increase your water intake to a minimum 2L per day and take a follow up photo 10 days later. You will see a decrease in bags and fine lines as well as an overall brighter appearance. Water is essential to skin health and if you start with a big glass first thing in the morning, it really isn't difficult to get through 2L a day!
Sleep to the rescue
Every bit of healing and repair our bodies do, they do while we sleep. It isn't called beauty sleep for no reason. While you get your rest, your skin does as well, using the time to regenerate and refresh. Aim for the sweet-spot of 7-9 hours of shut eye per night and watch them bags disappear!
Sweat it out
We tend to focus on the cardiovascular benefits physical activity, and those are important. But anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skin healthy and vibrant. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin. In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells. So next time you think about skipping the gym, know that you're doing both your skin and body a disservice. Short for time? A brisk walk around the block can do the trick!
